Firefly Garden

Firefly Breeding

In the heart of Bali, FIREFLY GARDEN is a living artwork where light returns to the night. Once abundant across rice fields, fireflies have nearly disappeared, their glow fading with pollution and urban growth. Together with a devoted team of local Balinese, Roosegaarde has created the world’s first large-scale breeding program to restore them as part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

FIREFLY GARDEN is both science and poetry — where biology becomes design, and design becomes devotion. Each spark of light is a sign of ecological balance and a vision of a future Bali where eco-tourism nurtures rather than consumes. Instead of extracting from nature, we learn to give back, creating harmony between people and the living environment. A future highlight could be an intimate dining experience for two, surrounded by glowing fireflies — a serene glimpse of Bali’s future.

The short film Return of the Fireflies captures this journey. Shot under red light invisible to fireflies, it enters their world without disturbance, offering a rare view of their silent courtship. More than a document, it is a luminous love story and a poetic call to action — reminding us that we may be the last generation to witness this living light. The film has received international acclaim, winning multiple awards including Best Microfilm in the USA, Award Winner Short Film in Italy, and Outstanding Achievement in India, with official selections across Kyoto, Mexico, Indonesia, Sweden, the USA, and the Netherlands.

As Daan Roosegaarde says: “Fireflies are the gatekeepers of a better future. Their return shows us how harmony between humans and nature can begin again.”

The film Return of the Fireflies has received international recognition, winning Best Microfilm at the Touchstone Independent Film Festival in the USA, Award Winner Short Film at the Bracciano Film and Arts Festival in Italy, Winner Short Film and Outstanding Achievement Award at the Sundarban International Film Festival in India, and is a Finalist at the International Film Festival The Hague in the Netherlands. Return of the Fireflies is also officially selected for the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in Mexico, Kyoto Independent Film Festival in Japan, the 4th Dimension Independent Film Festival in Indonesia, the Moonlight International Film Festival in Sweden, the New York Film Festival in the USA, and the Swedish International Film Festival.

The current private FIREFLY GARDEN pilot in Pererenan, Bali, spans 1,000 m² as a preview to the upcoming 3,000 m² FIREFLY GARDEN. This sanctuary hosts butterflies by day and fireflies by night, supported by flora and fauna that sustain their life cycles. The garden includes a dedicated firefly nursery, where firefly eggs grow into adults over 4 to 10 months. The environment is kept free from light pollution, and the surrounding waters are continuously purified.

Roosegaarde's work continues his Dutch ancestors' legacy in Indonesian tea cultivation, as described in Hella S. Haasse's The Tea Lords. The FIREFLY GARDEN is self-commissioned by Studio Roosegaarde, with special thanks to Pak Wayan and his team of experts, Udayana University, and Nuanu for their valuable support.

The recent Return of the Fireflies is a poetic short film which won several international awards and is directed by Daan Roosegaarde, with cinematography by Mad Universe Film, music composed by Grigorios Nikolaou, and production by Mufti Bahari. The film features the voice of Sarah Wesley and models Cindy Chayani Mangampang, Mimi Korompis, and Fabian Peri, with special thanks to Pak Wayan and his team Bring back the light.

Access to the private FIREFLY GARDEN Pilot is currently by invitation only, with free entrance. For inquiries or invitations, please contact mail@studioroosegaarde.net
