Thousands of biodegradable light SPARKs in Melbourne
Thousands of biodegradable light SPARKs in Melbourne
Inspired by fireflies, birds and the galaxy of stars, Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde designed a flock of sparks made from biodegradable materials which catch the wind and dance in the night sky. Once released, the sparks form ever-shifting clouds of light that behave like atmospheric bioluminescence, caught in a cool night breeze.

Welcome for four evenings during RISING where SPARK will be released above Fed Square, free to be enjoyed by anyone who takes the time to look up. Wednesday 7 June till Saturday 10 June, 18.30 till 22.30 at Fed Square in Melbourne.

Marvel at thousands of biodegradable sparks as they come to life to illuminate the city of Auckland in New Zealand for three special evenings this summer.

Inspired by the breathtaking lights of fireflies, flocks of birds and galaxies of stars, Roosegaarde draws on state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly technology to present SPARK Auckland, a night-time spectacle for the senses.

This free, relaxed outdoor event invites Aucklanders to revel in the interconnectedness of humans and nature. As the dazzling display rises and falls on natural air currents before us, it creates a stunning alternative to traditional communal celebrations – and a feeling of child-like wonder that can bring us all together.

Imagined by Dutch designer and innovator Daan Roosegaarde, this organic floating light work has held thousands across Bilbao, Madrid, and London in raptures. Now, for three nights only, be among the first in the Southern Hemisphere to experience the magic for yourself. Bring your friends, family and a blanket, and be amazed under the sparks.

Welcome 24, 25 and 26 March 20.15 to 23.00 at Pukekawa / Auckland Domain. Register here to claim your free tickets.

Lights off, stars on
"Last night the city of Leiden was a remarkable experiment: SEEING STARS Leiden. In the wide vicinity of the Leiden Observatory, all the lights were turned off by thousands of citizens. Although it was cloudy, we suddenly saw Saturn and other stars in the historical streets of Leiden. It was so mysterious to walk with so many people in a dark city. I felt like an astronaut on Earth.” - Daan Roosegaarde

TOUCH
TOUCH transforms museum Draiflessen Collection into an ephemeral dream world of light through the joining of hands.

What was until recently a completely everyday, self-evident act of human encounter is suddenly no longer so: the mutual touch, the embrace or the handshake. Roosegaarde addresses this moment and the significance of this human connection in his expansive installation developed especially for the Draiflessen Collection.

In the museum's 4,300 m3 exhibition space, Roosegaarde has created TOUCH, an interactive work of art that captivates visitors as they enter, creates a sense of wonder, and invites and inspires them to act without words. The fact that our perception and action are specifically directed towards this special act of connection unravels at the very moment of touch: this is the key to an imposing visual explosion that transports us and our counterpart into a new universe when the artwork’s electronic field senses when two visitors join hands and through this interaction, light is then coded into thousands of star lights.
