More than 20,000 visitors celebrated the return of the fireflies with SPARK Italy. The extraordinary exhibition lit up Pesaro's night sky with a swarm of glowing, eco-friendly sparks in honour of the Italian Capital of Culture 2024.

We are thrilled to announce the unveiling of our latest public artwork ‘Traces’ (‘Lichtsporen’ in Dutch) at Thor Park in Genk, Belgium, on 26th September.

‘Traces’ marks an important moment in the transformation of Genk from its coal-rich past to becoming a beacon of renewable energy and innovation.

Roosegaarde is designing and building the world’s first firefly garden in Bali. The connected nursery ensures a stable breeding programme to have a healthy swarm of fireflies and collect new scientific knowledge.

When you tell this story to local Balinese they get emotional, since fireflies were everywhere 20 years ago but not anymore.

A firefly wants to have clean air, clean water, clean soil, and no light pollution. So we see them as a gatekeeper for our better future.

In honor of the Italian Capital of Culture 2024, the city of Pesaro will host the Italian premiere of our ecological fireworks installation SPARK. Inspired by fireflies, SPARK will transform the public Miralfiore Park into a captivating wonder on 22-24 March in 2024 at 20.00 to 23.00. Free entrance.

Studio Roosegaarde collaborated with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and Modon to enhance air quality and install the first SMOG FREE TOWER in Abu Dhabi. The SMOG FREE TOWER uses ionisation technology to capture pollution and create a clean air park after its introduction to China, the Netherlands, South Korea and Poland.

From the captured smog particles a SMOG FREE RING is created as a tangible souvenir. By sharing a SMOG FREE RING you donate 1000 m3 of clean air to the city.

The SPARK Tokyo exhibition with Hermès brings our sustainable fireworks to Japan this holiday season, blending art and technology. Inspired by Hermès' 150th-anniversary fireworks, this modern magic unfolds in Tokyo in 2023.

The city of Genk in Belgium has commissioned artist Daan Roosegaarde to design and build a public artwork at the industrial Thor Park by the summer of 2025. The artwork will become an embodiment of the power of nature, and supports the transition of the landscape from coal to renewable energy.

Inspired by fireflies, birds and the galaxy of stars, Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde designed a flock of sparks made from biodegradable materials which catch the wind and dance in the night sky. Once released, the sparks form ever-shifting clouds of light that behave like atmospheric bioluminescence, caught in a cool night breeze.
