4D-Pixel

4D-Pixel is a smart surface which physically reacts to your voice, music and shows relievo letters. This interactive sculpture is a merging of electromagnetics, software and electronics. The dynamic of the wall is made of hundreds of pixels which react on the dynamic in soundfrequencies.

This way there is a direct relation between the human activity and the appearance of the surface; in this fusion between body and machine.

Date:
2004/ 2005, Enschede/ Rotterdam.

Client:
Initiative of Studio Roosegaarde.

Specs:
Electronics, software, electromagnets and other media; 3 x 1 x 2 m.

Artistic production:
Daan Roosegaarde

In collaboration with:
Axis &Stuifmeel Techniek (partner in technology) and Peter de Man (partner in sound &interaction).

With thanks to:
KITT Engineering (electronics) and Lukas Pauka (intern). Made possible with the support of Fonds BKVB in Amsterdam, foundation tART and CBK Rotterdam. Movie by Ward ten Voorde.

Comments:
"4D-Pixel is about how to create a direct human intervention in architecture, not about electronic circuits or mechanisms; how can space be adaptive to the needs of its users. This cutting edge approach is being further developed as an interactive element for a public building." From R-echos (see links below).

Liquid 2.0 is an interactive living cocoon which physically adapts to sounds and motion of the visitors.

An intriguing fusion of sculpture, software and mechanism results in version 2.0; more adaptive, more sensual and more dangerous.

Date:
2006, Rotterdam, NL.

Client:
Initiative of Studio Roosegaarde.

Specs:
Wood, software, sound, mechanism, electronics and other media; 5 x 5 x 3 meter.

Artistic production:
Daan Roosegaarde

In collaboration with:
Axis &Stuifmeel Techniek (partner in technology) and Peter de Man (partner in sound &interaction).

With thanks to:
Ymif Engineering (electronics). Made possible with the support of CBK Rotterdam.

Comments:
"The moment somebody new entered it lifted up its roof to make more space for the new inhabitant", recalls Daan Roosegaarde. "It results in an object which, although filled with new media, seems 'natural' for the visitor, as an extension of their skin. 'Natural', of course, in a 21 century way." From: We-Make-Money-Not-Art.com (see links below).

Liquid Space

Liquid Space is a space which physically reacts to the behavior of the visitor. Through the use of sensors, software and mechanisms, the space changes in form and sound.

If you sit silent Liquid Space will fall asleep, if there is a lot of activity the space will become larger and more dynamic. This way, an adaptive situation is created in which visitor and space become one.

Date:
2003, Graduation project Academy of Fine Arts, Enschede, NL.

Client:
Initiative of Daan Roosegaarde.

Specs:
Steel, software, sound, electronics, mechanism, sensors, pipes, paint; 8 x 4 x 5 meter.

Artistic production:
Daan Roosegaarde

In collaboration with:
KITT Engineering (electronics) and Peter de Man (software). Made possible with the support of Saxion Hogescholen Enschede (department Art and Technology), Sebastiaan Elstgeest and Architectuurcentrum Twente.

Comments:
"Daan Roosegaarde describes his work as fluctuating between sculpture and architecture. Last week I got the opportunity to find out more about his work when he talked at Game Set Match. Out of all his work his liquid space projects which he continues to develop were of most interest to me since he shares my curiosity with physically transforming space." From Interactive Architecture (see links below).

Wind 3.0 exists out of hundreds of fibers which, through a merging of electronics and ventilators, move and interact with the visitor.

Wind 3.0 plays with the relation and differences between nature and technology.
